Tai Chi Chuan is an internal martial art used by the Chinese for thousands of years as a vehicle for self-cultivation and self defense. An exercise of the body, mind and spirit. Tai Chi Chuan consists of slow and even movements relaxing the body and the mind, promoting the flow of vital energy and replacing stiffness with flexibility and good body co-ordination. |

Tai Chi Chuan is an exercise that may be practiced by anyone. It is non-strenuous, relaxing and graceful. Tai Chi Chuan benefits the student by promoting better metabolism. Soothing the central nervous system promoting relaxation; improving blood circulation, increasing the flow of oxygen through slow, deep and coordinated breathing; messaging the internal organs; promoting digestion and elimination through relaxation. |

It is believed that one of Tai Chi’s greatest attributes is that it channels the flow of Chi (energy) through the body. The Chinese believe as long as the flow of Chi is uninhibited you will remain healthy. |

The form of Tai Chi Chuan practiced at our school originates from Fu Zhong Wen (1903-1994). Fu is less well known in the United States than other masters as he was only able to travel outside of China in the summer of 1994, shortly before he died in Shanghai. His fame in East Asia, however, is well-established. Fu Zhong Wen is known as one of the most famous Tai Chi Masters in the world. From the age of 9 he was a student and constant companion of Tai Chi Master Yang Cheng Fu, credited with the creation of Yang Style Chi Chuan.
In 1944 Fu Zhong Wen founded the Yong Nian Tai Chi Association in order to carry on the work of his master in spreading Tai Chi Chuan to all people. When he founded the association, he selected diligence, perseverance, respect and sincerity as their Motto. Fu Zhong Wen lived his life according to that motto.
In 1972 the Tongji University in Shanghai carried out scientific research on the therapeutic value of Tai Chi on patients with Fu Zhong Wen and Fu Sheng Yuan as instructors. After 3 months the results achieved with some medical conditions including heart diseases, spleen dysfunction, arthritis and insomnia, propelled the ministry of sport to give an official recognition to the therapeutic value of Tai Chi.
Fu Zhong Wen would teach anyone for free, if necessary, just to spread the teachings of Tai Chi. Fu dedicated his life to practicing and teaching Tai Chi. He was voted one of the One Hundred Living treasures of China and was a great loss to his family and the Martial Arts world when he passed away at the age of 92. |
